Grounds began as a coffee, pastry and sandwich shop, as one of the first places to move into the old Murphys downtown district. At that time, Murphys was still a few years from a full blown revival and we were lucky that the community took to us right away. Not long after opening, people started asking for more, so we expanded the menu. Not long after that people wanted more than just coffee to drink, so we expanded our drink menu to include a full bar. Within a year of opening, Grounds had become a local favorite serving breakfast, lunch and dinners.
River Klass, the owner of Grounds, is a very modest man. He studied his craft in the kitchen at the Sorbonne and worked in a series of Parisian restaurants where he honed his culinary techniques. He is also the owner of Firewood, another Murphys favorite. With his background in providing excellent food inside a welcoming and warm atmosphere, River stands as an area leader in fine dining and cuisine.
